Aleutian Adventure: Kayaking in the Birthplace of the Winds

Aleutians are a chain of rugged volcanic islands that stretch across the
Bering Sea between Alaska and Russia. Until about 150 years ago, the native
Aleut people carved out a precarious existence on several of the more hospitable
islands. ... Concentrating on the Islands of Four Mountains, a particularly
forbidding region, Bowermaster and three of his pals set out to kayak through
remote areas not traveled since the Aleuts mysteriously abandoned them long
ago. Despite embarking during the climatically auspicious summer season,
the paddling team ran into horrible weather - wicked winds, impenetrable
fog, and freezing rain - as well as treacherous ocean tides and currents.
In the end, the expedition was a signal success, as is this author's fascinating
account of it. The maps and illustrations included are quite useful. The
format of the book and profusion of glorious color photographs suggest that
National Geographic is aiming at a younger audience, but this book will
appeal to armchair explorers of all ages.")
